Bookmarks and TODO

FREEIDE

Two panels in the right activity bar, just below AI Chat, help you find your way back to code: Bookmarks for lines you marked yourself, and TODO for the markers already written in comments. Both are Free and need no account. In the mobile layout they are in the More list.

Bookmarks

A bookmark remembers a line of a project file. Selecting it opens the file at that line.

Bookmarks are grouped by file and show their label, or the line itself when there is none. Bookmarked lines carry a marker next to the line number, Ctrl+F11 toggles one on the caret line, and Stored in keeps them in the project or private to you.

To add or remove a bookmark:

  • press Ctrl+F11 in the editor, which toggles the bookmark on the caret line;
  • right-click a line and choose Add Bookmark or Remove Bookmark;
  • or click + in the panel header, which acts on the caret of the active editor.

The panel groups bookmarks by file. Each row shows the line number and either its label or a preview of the line.

  • Rename: double-click a row, or use the pencil button, to give the bookmark a label. An empty label shows the line preview again.
  • Remove: the cross on a row removes one bookmark, the cross on a file header removes all bookmarks in that file, and the bin in the header removes all of them after a confirmation.
  • Filter: the filter box matches file paths, labels and line previews.

Where bookmarks are stored

The Stored in switch chooses the storage for the current project:

StorageLocationUse it when
Project.genexy/bookmarks.yaml, referenced from project.yamlthe bookmarks should be committed and shared
Useryour home directory (~/.genexy), outside the repositorythe bookmarks are private notes for yourself

Switching moves the existing bookmarks to the new location. Project storage needs a Genexy project (.genexy/project.yaml); in a plain folder only User storage is available.

TODO

The TODO panel lists every comment marker in the project:

TODO, FIXME, BUG, HACK, XXX and NOTE

Markers are matched in upper case on word boundaries, so identifiers like todoList are not reported. An author in parentheses is recognised and shown next to the tag:

// TODO(alice): handle the empty response // FIXME: retry on timeout

Items are grouped by file; selecting one opens the file at the marker.

Every TODO, FIXME, HACK, XXX, BUG and NOTE comment, grouped by file. The tag buttons show the count per tag and narrow the list, the filter matches text, path and author, and selecting a row opens the file at the comment.
  • Tag filters: the buttons under the filter box show the count for each tag and narrow the list to the tags you switch on.
  • Text filter: matches the comment text, the file path and the author.
  • Collapse all folds every file group; Rescan project rebuilds the list from scratch.

The scan respects .gitignore and skips lock files, minified files and source maps. The list fills in progressively during the first scan and then updates itself as files change, so a rescan is rarely needed.

Very large projects are capped: when the limit is reached, the panel says the list is incomplete. Narrow it down by ignoring generated or vendored folders in .gitignore.

From AI

Both panels are available to your AI through the Genexy MCP tools: an agent can list, add, rename and remove bookmarks and list TODO comments with the same filters. See AI Chat.
