Connections
The Connections panel keeps the servers, devices and databases you work with, in folders, and opens each of them in the right place: a terminal, a remote file browser or a tree of tables.
Connection types
| Type | Opens as | Default port |
|---|---|---|
| SSH | a terminal tab | 22 |
| Telnet | a terminal tab | 23 |
| Serial | a terminal tab on a COM port, /dev/tty… or tcp://host:port | – |
| SFTP | a remote file browser tab | 22 |
| FTP / FTPS | a remote file browser tab | 21 |
| VNC | a remote desktop tab | 5900 |
| PostgreSQL | schemas and tables in the tree; a table opens as a results grid | 5432 |
Connections is a PRO feature. Remote Desktop (RDP) and the other database engines (MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Oracle, SQLite, H2, Elasticsearch, Redis, KeyDB) are in development: an entry of a type your build does not include stays in the list, dimmed, with “Not available in this version / plan”.
Add a connection
+ in the panel header adds a folder or a connection of any available type. Quick Connect (the lightning) opens the same dialog in one-time mode for SSH, Telnet and Serial: nothing is saved unless you turn Save to Connections on.
The dialog asks only for what the type needs:
- SSH, Telnet, SFTP, FTP: host and port, username and password. SSH and SFTP take an optional private key
(
~/.ssh/id_rsa, with Browse…); the password field unlocks a passphrase-protected key. Without credentials, Genexy tries~/.ssh/id_ed25519,id_ecdsaandid_rsa. - SFTP and FTP: an optional remote folder to start in. FTP can Use TLS (FTPS); without it the dialog warns that plain FTP sends the password and the files unencrypted.
- Serial: the port, with Rescan ports and the detected ports as chips, the baud rate (9600 by default, 115200 is common for ESP32 / ESP8266) and the line ending. Advanced sets data bits, parity, stop bits and local echo.
- Database: the engine, host, port, user, password and database, or a JDBC connection URL, and Use SSL / TLS.
Test checks that the connection works before you save it. Save & Connect saves and opens it in one step.
Working with the list
Folders nest, and connections and folders can be dragged between them, multi-selected, copied and pasted. The filter matches names, hosts, serial ports and database drivers. The icon colour shows the state: blue idle, green connected, red failed.
Connections, including their passwords and private keys, are stored unencrypted in ~/.genexy/connections.json on
this machine. SSH and SFTP do not verify the server’s host key yet, so they cannot detect a machine in the middle.
Prefer key-based login, protect your user account, and do not use these connections on networks you do not trust.
From AI
With Connections available, your AI can list and save connections, open SSH and Telnet sessions and send input to them, and connect to a database to list its schemas, tables and columns and run queries, through the Genexy MCP tools. See AI Chat.
