Text Editor
Every text file opens in the Text Editor, the same Monaco editor that VS Code uses. The language comes from the file extension, and the colours follow your theme.
What it offers
- Code intelligence: completion, diagnostics, hover, inlay hints, code lenses, quick fixes and semantic highlighting, wherever a language server is available.
- Go to Definition:
Ctrl+Click(Cmd+Clickon macOS) a symbol to open its definition, also in another file, a library or a decompiled class. - Git blame: Blame in the toolbar shows who last changed each line; click an annotation to open the commit. Also in the editor context menu as Show Git Blame.
- Locate in Files: the target button in the toolbar reveals the file in the Files panel.
- Folding by the language server’s ranges, or by indentation when there is none; bracket and indentation guides; the minimap.
- Breakpoints and the debug line in the gutter, see Debugging.
- Bookmarks on any line.
Font, line numbers, minimap, word wrap and the other options are in Settings → Editor. Saving, changes on disk and read-only files work as described in File Views & Editors.
On phones and tablets
The editor uses a larger font, wraps long lines and hides the minimap. A toolbar above the on-screen keyboard adds the keys a soft keyboard lacks, undo and redo, find and save.
Files on a server
A file opened from an SFTP or FTP connection is edited and saved like a project file, but without a language server, Git blame or Locate in Files; the toolbar shows the server and the path.
