File Views & Editors

FREEIDE

Every file opens in a tab, in the view that fits it. Genexy decides by the file extension and, for text, by the content:

FileOpens in
Source code, configuration, any other textText Editor
Markdown (.md)Text Editor with Markdown Preview
Images: PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, SVG, BMP, ICO, AVIF…Image Viewer
PDFPDF Viewer
Audio and video: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, MP4, WebM…Media Player
ZIP family: ZIP, JAR, WAR, EAR, AAR, APK, VSIX, WHL…Archive Viewer
Other binaries: executables, fonts, databases, Office files…Hex Editor
OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, JSON Schema, SQL, GraphQL, ProtobufContract Views & Editors (PRO), or the Text Editor

A file that turns out to be binary although its extension says text (it contains NUL bytes, or mostly characters that cannot be decoded) opens in the Hex Editor instead of a screen of garbage.

Open As

The Open as selector in the editor toolbar shows what was detected, such as Auto (Text), and lets you choose another editor for the file: the Text Editor, one of the contract editors or the Hex Editor. The same choice is in the Files context menu under Open As. Your choice is kept with the tab. The Hex Editor cannot be chosen while the file has unsaved changes.

Tabs

Opening a file creates its tab or focuses the existing one. Drag tabs to reorder them. The tab context menu closes the active tab, all other tabs, tabs to one side, or all tabs. A file tab shows the same coloured file-type icon as the Files panel, and a green name when a generator owns the file. Unsaved work is tracked per tab, and Genexy asks before discarding it. The tab order and the active tab are restored when you reopen the project.

Set the layout in Settings → Appearance → Tab Orientation:

  • Horizontal (Top): a tab strip above the editor.
  • Vertical (Side): a list beside the editor, which keeps long file names readable.
Both tab orientations. Horizontal (Top) puts tabs in a strip above the editor; Vertical (Side) puts them in a list next to it, which keeps long filenames readable. Tabs can be dragged into a different order in either layout.

Saving

Press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on macOS) or the Ctrl+S button in the toolbar. Settings → Editor → Saving can format the file, trim trailing whitespace and insert a final newline on save, and turn on auto-save after a delay or when the editor loses focus.

When the file changes on disk

Genexy watches the open files. A file without unsaved changes reloads when it changes on disk (or asks first, depending on your settings). When you have unsaved changes and the file changes too, a banner offers:

  • Compare: both versions side by side, with the right side editable, then Use right side;
  • Load from disk: take the version on disk; undo brings your edits back;
  • Keep mine: the next save overwrites the file.

A deleted file keeps its content in the editor, and saving creates it again.

Read-only files

  • Library sources you reach with Go to Definition open read-only, with the library and its version in the toolbar.
  • Decompiled classes from a JAR are reconstructions; the toolbar says so and names the decompiler.
  • Generated files owned by a code generator carry a green generated badge. Typing in one asks whether to take it over: a file you take over leaves the generation, and you maintain it by hand from then on.
